Wait to see if the rain would come on time. Wait to see if pests would eat his crop before he even noticed them. Wait to find out, often too late, whether this season would feed his family or leave them struggling.
That kind of waiting is stressful. Nobody enjoys not knowing if their hard work will pay off. And for millions of Nigerian farmers, that stress has been part of daily life for generations.
Now, something is quietly changing that story. A simple app on a basic phone. A small drone flying over a field. These tools are giving farmers like Musa answers before disaster strikes, not after. This is agritech, and it is reshaping farming across Nigeria in ways that feel less like technology and more like relief.

Why Farmers Are Actually Embracing This
People do not resist change because they are lazy or stubborn. They resist change when it feels risky, confusing, or unnecessary. So why are Nigerian farmers, many of whom have farmed the same way for decades, starting to trust these new tools?
Because agritech solves a very human problem: not knowing. A farmer who is told in advance, “pests are coming, spray this week,” feels calmer than one who discovers the damage after it has already happened. Certainty feels like safety. And safety is something every farmer, every human being, wants.

Take Femi Adekoya, known to many as “the flying farmer.” His company, Integrated Aerial Precision, sends drones over farms ranging from large operations like Dangote Sugar to small cassava plots in Oyo State. These drones do not just take pretty pictures. They spray pesticide and fertiliser exactly where a plant needs it, instead of soaking the whole field. Farmers working with this service have cut their spending on inputs by about 30 percent, while harvesting more, not less. Even better, the system works without steady internet, which matters in villages where signal comes and goes like the weather itself.
Another company, KaraAgroAI, takes it a step further. After a drone flies over the farm, artificial intelligence studies the images and tells the farmer, in plain language, “this tree is sick” or “this row needs more nitrogen.” What once took weeks to notice can now be caught within hours. Imagine how much heartbreak that saves a farmer who has poured months of effort into a crop.

Across the country, drones are also helping spot fall armyworm, a pest known for destroying maize almost overnight. And in the northern maize belt, farms using satellite-guided irrigation have cut water use by close to a third, an enormous relief in a region where water is never guaranteed.
Mobile Apps: Help That Fits in a Pocket
Not every farmer can afford a drone, and that is completely understandable. But almost every farmer, even in the most remote village, carries a phone. This is where mobile apps quietly do some of the most powerful work in Nigerian agriculture today.
Crop2Cash lets farmers use even a basic, non smartphone to access banking and loans through simple phone codes. Over 500,000 farmers have used it to get financial support they could never get from a traditional bank.
ThriveAgric connects farmers to financing, better seeds, and buyers who actually pay fair prices. So far, it has supported more than 500,000 farmers across the country.
AgroMall helps farmers get crop insurance and credit for inputs, so one difficult season does not wipe out an entire year’s work and hope.
Hello Tractor works like an Uber for tractors. A farmer who cannot afford to own a tractor can simply book one nearby, use it for the hours needed, and get back to work faster than ever before.
Kitovu studies satellite images of a farmer’s land and sends back simple, honest advice on what the soil and crop actually need.
None of these tools ask a farmer to become a computer expert. That is the beauty of it. The technology hides quietly behind one button, or one text message.

What the Numbers Actually Tell Us
It helps to look past the excitement and check the real numbers.
Yields are rising by around 15 to 35 percent for maize, cassava, and yam farmers who use these tools. Farmers are spending 20 to 40 percent less on fertiliser and pesticide, simply because they now apply exactly what their crop needs, nothing more, nothing less. Water use has dropped by nearly a third in areas using smart irrigation guided by satellites.
These numbers are not just statistics on a page. For a farmer living close to the edge financially, saving 30 percent on input costs while growing more food can mean the difference between a painful year and a genuinely good one.

Why Some Farmers Have Not Joined In Yet
If agritech is so helpful, why has not every farmer adopted it already? The honest answers matter here.
Cost is a real barrier. A single drone can cost between 5,000 and 20,000 dollars, far beyond what a smallholder farming a few hectares can justify alone. Most farmers only access drones through a shared service, not by owning one themselves.
Awareness is another problem. Studies suggest that around 60 percent of Nigerian farmers have never even heard what a drone can actually do for their farm. Nobody can use a tool they do not know exists.
There is also the simple matter of trust and habit. Many farmers have done things one way for 30 or 40 years. Trusting a phone screen over an instinct passed down from a grandfather takes real courage, and that courage does not appear overnight.
And in parts of northern and central Nigeria, ongoing insecurity has pushed families off their farmland entirely. No app or drone can fix that kind of loss.
These barriers are deeply human, not just technical. Real change always takes time, patience, and trust, even when the benefits are obvious.
A New Kind of Farmer Is Emerging
Something quiet but powerful is happening across the country. The average Nigerian farmer used to be around 60 years old. Today, more young people, many of them comfortable with phones and apps, are entering farming. Not as laborers doing the same tasks their parents did, but as managers who read data, make informed decisions, and treat farming as a real business.
This shift is slowly changing how people see agriculture in Nigeria. It is no longer only “hard work under a hot sun.” It is becoming something else too: a smart, modern business where information can be just as valuable as rainfall.
